English Dominican Catholic cardinal blasts entities for abortion stance
Sept 15, 2007
The Dominican Republic's Cardinal today blasted groups, including the United Nations, he said are trying to pay off legislators to approve legislation to legalize abortion in the country.

(Dominican Today, September, 14 2007) SANTO DOMINGO. – Cardinal Nicholas De Jesus Lopez Rodriquez said some non-governmental organizations are resorting to bribery to ensure the legislation is passed quickly.

“There are powerful international hands behind this,” Rodriguez said. “To me, this is nothing strange. They have done it throughout the entire world.”

Earlier today, Rodriguez participated in a forum called “The Right To Life: Abortion Is Not A Right” with Catholic youth from all over the capital.

The cardinal’s comments, on Colorvision Channel 9 television, come just days after Sergia Galvan, director of the Women’s Health Collective and a leading pro-choice activist, told the IPS news service that denying abortions to victims of rape or incest is a violation of women’s rights. "The criminalization of abortion does not solve the problem; it merely forces vulnerable women to put their lives at risk by undergoing illegal abortions," Galvan said.

Galvan estimates up to 100,000 illegal abortions are performed in the Dominican Republic every year, according to pro-life news website lifenews.com. She says legalizing “therapeutic” abortion would protect the health and dignity of victims of sex crimes.

The current penalty for performing an abortion in the Dominican is six months to two years in prison.

Congress has already held two public consultations on the subject and is reported to be planning a third.
