English The Cardinal agrees with reforming Constitution by consensus
Jun 14, 2006
Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez said yesterday that the Dominican Constitution has been victim in the last years of "certain aggressions of unscrupulous politicians" who have been making amendments according to their conveniences.

(Domincan Today, May, 29) SANTO DOMINGO.- He said that he agrees with president Leonel Fernandez’s announcement to seek a consensus.

After expressing his disagreement with the reforms which the Magna Charta has been placed under, the cardinal affirmed that presently what is needed is to look for a group of specialists in constitutional law, who know well which are the points that can be saved and those that must be modified.

"In that sense, after that authorized opinion is had then it becomes necessary to engage in a open dialog to listen to suggestions and to see to what extent we can reach an agreement on the reform," he said.

He said he agreed with Fernandez’s position, who announced that he will summon all the social sectors to arrange the reforms that the country requires and especially the Constitution.

He stated expressed his support of the president of the Supreme Court, Jorge Subero Isa, who stated the need to reduce the number of the Central Electoral Board’s judges.

He pointed out that the electoral organism has worked well with few judges and mentioned the work carried out by past presidents of that court.

"There were few judges and things were done with much competence. The increase of judges obeyed to the interest to place the political parties and I maintain the contrary, that it must not have politicians of any type,” he said.

In his view, there is a need to look for competent, serious men and women, and who form a board which satisfies the needs of all, "political and non-political."

Lopez Rodriguez said that he expects that starting August 16 things in the National Congress will march well.

The senior prelate added that the recommendable thing is to analyze what are the current necessities and identify the fundamental points that the Dominican Republic needs.
