English Cardinal Sees Wait for Third World Pope
May 02, 2005
Brazilian Cardinal Claudio Hummes, once considered a possible candidate for pope, predicted Friday it would be a long time before the world sees a pontiff from a poor or developing nation.

(Associated Press, April 29, 2005) SAO PAULO, Brazil -- "I always knew that I would return from Vatican as Archbishop of Sao Paulo and not as pope," the 70-year-old Hummes said at a brief news conference.

"It will be a long time before we see a Third World pope," said Hummes, who heads the largest Roman Catholic diocese in the world's most populous Roman Catholic country.

He said the developed world feels a "lack of confidence" toward the Third World because it isn't "at the center of the Church's history."

He spoke shortly after celebrating a Mass in honor of newly elected Pope Benedict XV1, who succeeded John Paul II.

Hummes said the new pope, former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany, would surprise everyone with innovations.

"I am sure the pope won't leave things as they are -- he will move forward," he said.
