English Cardinal Erdö meets Pope in Vatican
Jul 03, 2006
Cardinal Peter Erdo had an audience with Pope Benedict XVI in Vatican City on Saturday, the Vatican press service reported on its official website.

Vatican, June 24 2006 (MTI) - Catholic Primate Erdo, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest and head of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops Conference, told MTI over the phone that he had met the Pope to express thanks for his consent to the beatification of Sara Salkahazi, a nun who was shot to death for sheltering Jews in Budapest during the Second World War.

The beatification ceremony will be held in Saint Stephen's Basilica on September 17 and the Pope qualified its spiritual influence as very important, said Erdo.

A member of the Sisters of Social Service, a charity organisation helping the poor, journalist, writer, and cultural activist Salkahazi helped to shelter hundreds of Jews, including many women and children, in a convent in the final and hardest months of the Second World War.

She was reported to the authorities, and henchmen of the ruling fascist Arrow Cross Party drove her and the people she had sheltered to the banks of the Danube, shooting them on December 27, 1944.

The Sisters of Social Service saved over 1,000 lives during the Second World War.
