Cappuccino che non lascia mai il suo saio, il cardinale americano era uno dei cosiddetti papabili allo scorso Conclave. Giocavano a suo favore l’estrazione francescana e (soprattutto) la capacità dimostranta nel ripulire la diocesi di Boston dopo lo scandalo pedofilia che l’aveva travolta. Un lavoro paziente e di successo che l’aveva portato a essere uno dei nomi di punta dell’episcopato americano. E che il suo nome circolasse tra i porporati in Sistina lo ammette lui stesso parlando con John Allen a Rio de Janeiro, dove si trova per la Giornata mondiale della gioventù: “Se le votazioni fossero proseguite ancora un giorno, più o meno, sarei stato in grande pericolo”. Una perifrasi elegante per dire che se Bergoglio non avesse sfondato e raggiunto rapidamente la quota dei due terzi necessari all’elezione, molti consensi si sarebbero riversati su di lui, il cardinale con la barba bianca.
