Benedetto XVI lo ricorda in due telegrammi inviati al cardinale Adrianus Johannes Simonis, arcivescovo di Utrecht, e al cardinale Walter Kasper, presidente del Pontificio Consiglio per la Promozione dell’Unità dei Cristiani: il Papa, esprimendo il suo cordoglio, ringrazia il Signore “per questo pastore infaticabile al servizio del Popolo di Dio e dell’unità della Chiesa” che ha dato “un nuovo slancio al dialogo ecumenico”.
