English Czech Cardinal Vlk to resume office on Monday after heart problem
Jun 14, 2008
Prague- Czech Cardinal Miloslav Vlk will resume office on Monday following his return from a two-week stay in a spa in which he convalesced after heart problems that sent him to hospital a month ago, Prague Archbishopric spokesman Ales Pistora said.

(ceskenoviny.cz, 13.06.2008) Vlk spent the two weeks in Trebon, south Bohemia.

Pistora said Vlk will go to spa once again on July 10. This time he will stay for three to four weeks in Podebrady, central Bohemia.

Vlk, 76, wrote to priests, deacons and monks last month that the time of his retirement has come close due to his health condition.

In accordance with canon law, Vlk asked the Pope for the opportunity to retire last year when he turned 75.

Pope Benedict XVI, however, did not accept Vlk's resignation and extended his service by two more years.

Pistora said it is to be expected that Vlk will again ask the Pope for allowing him to retire next year.

Vlk wrote in his letter that he was exhausted also due by the ongoing negotiations on the government bill on property settlement between the state and churches in which he took part.

He also participated in the lawsuit for the St Vitus' Cathedral at Prague Castle that the court eventually said belongs to the state earlier this year.
