English Cardinal against handing Prague Cathedral over to state - press
Mar 06, 2007
Prague- Czech Cardinal Miloslav Vlk does not want to hand over the St Vitus Cathedral back to the state even though the latest court decision cancelled the previous rulings according to which the church owned the cathedral, the daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) writes today.

(ceskenoviny.cz, 06.03.2007) "The Supreme Court's verdict does not at all state that we should hand the cathedral over. This is just the interpretation of the Presidential Office. As we see it, the dispute returned to the district court and the verdict is yet to come," Vlk told the paper.

The district court is to deal with the case in May.

The dispute over the ownership of the cathedral, which is part of the Prague Castle where the Presidential Office is also seated, has been lasting for more than 13 years. Last autumn it seemed that the dispute ended when the state handed the cathedral to the church following a court ruling, but then the Supreme Court cancelled the decision in February.

But Supreme Court deputy chairman Pavel Kucera said that the verdict "actually meant that no further court decisions were needed for the cathedral to be returned to the state."

The cardinal nevertheless opposed Kucera's view and told MfD that the church wanted a clear official decision in writing.

The Presidential Office and the Metropolitan Chapter, representing the church and state, are to discuss the handover today, the paper writes.

Petr Hajek, spokesman for President Vaclav Klaus, said he expected the chapter to hand the cathedral over today.
