English The Life of Virtue is Persecuted
Oct 18, 2004

(CWNews.com, Sep. 15 2004) Venice - The "ecology of good government" is based on a civil society marked by the virtues of each person, Cardinal Angelo Scola told a philosophical conference on September 15.

"In the long run," said the Patriarch of Venice, "it is not true that we can lack virtue in our personal lives but perform well according to our public roles-- as men of the Church, politicians, economic or social leaders."

A virtuous citizen, the cardinal continued, must engage in ethical conduct. He must also be mindful of the needs of the poor, and energetically promote the most necessary "intermediate institutions" in society, beginning with the family.

Cardinal Scola remarked that this authentically Christian approach to public life is not widely respected in contemporary Europe. In fact, he said, "the life of virtue is persecuted, more and more, in every dimension of life."
